Pingilla Privacy Policy
Pingilla’s approach to privacy is simple: your data belongs to you and never leaves your Mac. This applies to the free version and to Pingilla Pro alike.
By using Pingilla, you consent to this Privacy Policy and to the Terms of Service; please take a moment to review both documents.
How Pingilla stores data
- Everything Pingilla knows is stored locally on your Mac, inside the app’s private sandbox container: the sites you monitor and their uptime history and incidents, the networks and devices found by the LAN Scanner, the names, notes and tags you give them, your recent ping addresses and all preferences.
- Pingilla does not sync your data to iCloud or to any other service, and the developer has no copy of it.
- Deleting the app and its container removes all of this data.
- If you export a backup, a list of devices or a site report, or print them, Pingilla saves the file where you choose (or sends it to your printer). From then on that file is yours to keep: Pingilla doesn’t upload it anywhere.
Analytics and tracking
Pingilla does not include analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or third‑party tracking libraries of any kind. I’m the developer (Cesare Forelli, hi!) and I cannot see how you use the app, which sites you monitor or what is on your network.
If, in your Mac’s settings, you choose to share analytics with app developers, Apple may send me anonymous crash reports and usage statistics about Pingilla. This is controlled by you and handled by Apple, not by the app; you can turn it off in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
Network activity performed by Pingilla
Pingilla only connects to the network to do what you ask of it, and none of the requests below carry information about you:
- Site Monitor: periodic requests to the websites you add, to check that they respond. With Pingilla Pro, the expiry date of each site’s security certificate is read from the same connection.
- Connectivity check: before reporting a site as down, Pingilla makes a plain request to apple.com or google.com, to tell a real outage apart from your Mac being offline. Nothing about you or your sites is included.
- LAN Scanner: on your local network only, Pingilla sends pings, short connection attempts to common ports, Bonjour (mDNS) queries and reverse DNS lookups, and reads your Mac’s own ARP table to show device MAC addresses. If you use Wake on LAN, Pingilla broadcasts a wake-up packet on your local network. Device manufacturers are looked up in a database included in the app, without contacting any server. macOS asks for your permission to access the local network the first time.
- Ping: requests to the addresses you enter.
- App Store: purchases of Pingilla Pro and their restoration are handled by Apple.
As with any internet connection, the websites and servers Pingilla contacts can see your public IP address. Requests to the sites you monitor identify themselves as “Pingilla/1.0 (uptime monitor)”, so their owners may see this in their logs.
Notifications about sites and devices are generated on your Mac; no push notification service is involved.
Account and payments
Pingilla requires no account. Purchases are handled by Apple via the App Store: Pingilla does not process or store your payment information, and the developer has no access to your name, email address or payment details, unless you contact me directly as described below and choose to share them.
Contact the developer
If you email me for support, I will receive your email address and whatever you decide to include in your message. Please don’t send passwords or other sensitive details: they are never needed to help you.
When you use Help › Contact Support in the app, Pingilla opens a new email in your own mail app with a short support report: the app and macOS versions, your settings, how many sites, networks and devices you have and how they are doing, and facts about the last network scan. It never contains your site addresses, device names, IP or MAC addresses. Nothing is sent until you send the email yourself, and you can read, edit or delete the report before sending it. Help › Copy Support Report copies the same report, for webmail.
For the personal data in support emails, the data controller is Cesare Forelli, reachable at support@cdf1982.com. These emails are used only to answer your request, on the basis of your request itself, and are deleted within one month after the request is closed. You can ask me at any time to access, correct or delete them by writing to the same address; you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority.
